Artifact from Business in the Previous Century

A common object discovered in a drawer.

Many a photographer above a certain age is nostalgic for the benevolent goliath of film brought down by a lowly chip of silicon. That is nothing more than creative destruction, the ongoing path of mankind’s technological evolution. But this is more. This is a totally alien worldview. A large, successful corporation was a world onto itself. Vertically integrated. Paternalistic. Your grandfather worked for the company. Your uncle worked for the company, your children would work for the company.

If you were a high-tech company in 19th century America you built your own water system, sewerage, electric generating plant. Even your own railroad. Your employees ate at the company cafeteria, with company chiefs, cooks, servers, dishwashers, produce buyers.

And silverware.
