Niles is one of five towns that merged to form the City of Fremont, California. It may be best known as the location of one of the first movie studios in California, Essanay Studios. Adjacent Niles Canyon was the location for their filming of many of Broncho Billy westerns and Charlie Chaplin‘s landmark film The Tramp. The district’s physical separation from the rest of Fremont and unique history results in a community of special charm where, as one wag put it, “antique shops stand shoulder to shoulder with biker bars”.
